Living in Punavuori – The Heart of Design, Culture, and Cozy Living in Helsinki

The Heart of Design, Culture, and Cozy Living in Helsinki

My name’s Celina and from March to September 2024 I lived in a Comodo apartment in Ullanlinna. I didn’t realize it at the time but the unexpected move allowed me to experience life in Helsinki from a different perspective. After I moved back home I decided to continue the adventure by spending more time in the other districts of Helsinki. So join me, as I see what life would be like in Punavuori, Kallio/Hakaniemi, Jätkäsaari and Töölö.

A Neighborhood That Feels Like Home
Punavuori is my home and where I’ve been living the past seven years. Once a working-class neighborhood and historically referred to as the red village, it has become a popular destination due to its community culture, vibrant living and the variety of shops and cafes it has to offer its residents. Making it the perfect choice for temporary accommodation, whether you’re a family of four, single  or retired.

Perfect location – close to everything
What I loved about this area is how close you are to the city center. You have trams 3, 6 and 1 and buses 20 and 30 which take you to the city center and Kamppi. You are also close to the sea (I can see the sea from my street). You also have everything you need close by (just like in Kallio). I first lived on Albertinkatu above the K-Market but my closet outgrew my apartment and I moved to a bigger one near Sinebrychoff park.

The charm of Sinebrychoff Park
And If you find yourself in a Comodo apartment in Punavuori, you’ll be within walking distance to this park too. This park was originally the private garden of a wealthy Russian businessman called Nikolai Sinebrychoff- founder of Sinebrychoff brewery. It includes Southpark Restaurant and Sinebrychoff Art Museum. One of my favorite things about it is watching the Sinebrychoff horses be walked through it in the summer.

A hub for art, design, and second-hand shopping
In recent years, Punavuori has become known for its bohemian upbringing, sporting an abundance of artistry with well over 200 design stores
You’ll also find plenty of second hand stores. I love Relove on Fredrikinkatu and Flea further down on Iso Roba. I have found so many treasures in Flea, including a Burberry winter jacket and all glitter navy blue jacket. After shopping, it’s not uncommon for me to go grab the last of the days donuts from Round, where they have a 50% discount from 20-21 every day.

Culinary delights – a neighborhood for food lovers.
So if you’re staying in Punavuori, I highly recommend doodling around Fredrikinkatu and Iso Roobertinkatu to check them out. You’re sure to find something new and unique, whilst supporting local businesses. You’ll also find a diverse selection of cuisines, ranging from Scandinavian to Georgian.
There’s Green Hippo, located at Punavuorenkatu 2 for their famous avocado toast, Bakerika known for her delicious treats at Fredrikinkatu 25 and Bas Bas Kulma or Baskeri & Basso, at Tehtaankatu 27-29 offering amazing dinners and cocktails in a cozy setting. You should also pop by Bob’s Laundry at Merimiehenkatu 40, not a laundromat but a hip bar to enjoy a cocktail and small bite to eat.

Activities and entertainment in Punavuori.
In addition, there’s no lack of choices for activities here. From game nights at Gate A21, to escape rooms at TrueScape, a movie night at Riviera or a drink next to the sea at Malja, there’s surely something for everyone. For those sporty types, take a relaxing walk or run from Punavuori through Eira, around the harbor and back.
Personally, I love escape rooms so if you do too and you want an adrenaline rush (i mean that’s what they’re for right?!) you should really try Hannibal at TrueScape. Spoiler alert: the room includes an actor and you’ll be running for your life but man did I love it!

A neighborhood that leaves a lasting impression.
Regardless of the reason you end up staying a while in Punavuori, one thing is for sure; you’ll find everything you need here and when you go home, you’ll do so with a new perspective of Helsinki and a handful of memories.

When you are staying over a month and have an estimate regarding the length of your stay, we recommend choosing a Flexible & Fixed contract type and picking a suitable length and notice period. Eg. with the contract type 1-3 months you agree to stay at least one month, but not more than three months. Should you need more flexibility for the length of your stay, we recommend our Until Further Notice contract type, where the length of your stay is not limited.

When you are planning to stay at least one, six or 10 months, but do not wish to commit to a specific end date, we recommend that you choose the contract type Until Further Notice. By choosing this contract type, you make sure that you have the apartment at your disposal for as long as you need. All you need to do is to choose a suitable minimum length for your stay and the desired notice period!

Of course! There are different types of rental agreements. When you make a booking, simply choose a flexible contract.
